The Graduate Management Admission Test is a standardised test for MBA applicants and it measures the verbal, mathematical and analytical skills of the candidate.
How does it help?
The GMAT is a test for business schools to assess the potential of the applicants for advanced degrees in business and management. It is a global test for applicants to showcase their skills and a common standard for the various business schools to analyse the talents of the students and pick the ones who fit the institution’s requirements.
How is it different?
The GMAT test is entirely computerised and no two students get an identical set of questions. The test has a maximum score of 800. It is one of the major factors that might influence a candidate’s admission in a school of his or her choice. A good GMAT score, while impressive, does not guarantee a place in business schools, but it is one of the initial stages of the application processes and might make the difference between the application being considered further or rejected.
What are the sections of GMAT?
The GMAT is divided into four sections – Analytical, Verbal, Quantitative and Integrated Reasoning.
• Analytical Writing Assessment –One topic is given where the student is given an argument to analyse the duration of this test is 30 minutes. This section grades range from 0-6 in 0.5 increments.
• Integrated reasoning- In this section, the questions test the student’s multi source reasoning, graphics interpretation, two part analysis and table analysis. In the duration of 30 minutes, the student is expected to answer 12 questions based on reasoning. The scoring scale is 1-8 in 1 point increments.
• Quantitative –37 questions are asked to test the students’ proficiency in problem solving, data sufficiency etc. The students get 75 minutes to answer these questions. The scaled score ranges for 0-60.
• Verbal – The reading, comprehension, critical reasoning, sentence correction capabilities of the student are tested with 41 questions, in this section that lasts 75 minutes. Verbal scores range from 0-60, and it is also scaled score.
The total GMAT score can range from 200 -800 in 10 point increments.
GMAT training can be done online or as classroom training depending upon the institute’s and the student’s convenience.
What is the best GMAT training methodology?
GMAT training should concentrate equally on all the four sections of the examination and should help the students align their resume into a business school resume. GMAT training should also focus on helping the students form their long term and short term MBA goals. The GMAT examination requires intensive, rigorous weeks long training and should offer additional support programs that focus on the events after the GMAT examination as in resume training and goal training.
Points to note
GMAT examinations are a standard examination for MBA aspirants and influence their selection process. However, they are not the final and only admission criteria. They offer students a chance to impress the board with their scores amongst many thousand other candidates but the individuals might require additional training to perform effectively on the other aspects that a complete application requires.
